Although they are the simplest and smallest self-replicating bacteria, Mycoplasma infections tend to be persistent, difficult to detect, diagnose, and cure. Mycoplasmas are surface parasites of human respiratory and urogenital tracts. Mycoplasma pneumoniae is often the causative agent of community-acquired pneumonia. The organism¿s affinity for respiratory epithelial cells and its ability to secrete hydrogen peroxide are a potent combination, leading to oxidative tissue damage.
